M&D Umbrella Solutions has evolved from humble beginnings in a small office in Portsmouth city center to become a cornerstone for thousands of contractors and numerous recruitment agencies, operating from its headquarters at Crystal House Suite 6B, Luton
In its inception, the company consisted of just three employees managing payroll for a few hundred local contractors. Fast forward 17 years, despite numerous legislative and market hurdles, Liquid Friday has grown significantly. Presently, it employs 100 staff members at its headquarters, providing support to over 200 contractors across more than 89 recruitment agencies.
In 2023, the M&D Umbrella Solutions expanded its service portfolio by introducing an Invoice Finance division, which offers adaptable and prompt invoice financing solutions to the recruitment sector.

As a contractor under M&D Umbrella Solutions company, you are employed by us, and we engage with your recruitment agency to assign you to various client projects.
Operating under the PAYE umbrella offers a straightforward and adaptable payment method. Taxes and National Insurance contributions are deducted at the source, and you contribute to an approved workplace pension scheme. Additionally, you are eligible for statutory benefits such as Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) and Maternity or Paternity Pay (SMP/SPP).
Employment with an umbrella company alleviates concerns about IR35, ensuring continuity of employment, which is essential for endeavors like applying for mortgages or other forms of financing.
Your payment frequency depends on the specific assignment you’re engaged in, which may entail weekly, monthly, fortnightly, or project-based compensation. Typically, M&D Umbrella Solutions employees receive weekly payments, with one week’s pay issued in arrears every Friday. While in most instances, salaries are deposited into accounts on Friday mornings, the exact timing of clearance can vary, with some banks processing transactions until 6pm.
As an employee, you have the right to holiday pay, which is calculated as a proportionate share of 28 days per year. Generally, we hold this amount until you use it for time off or until your employment concludes. Alternatively, you can opt to receive this pay in advance, disbursed alongside your regular wages each pay period.
This deduction from the Charge Out/Assignment rate, mandated by HMRC regulations, is subtracted by M&D Umbrella Solutions from the agency. As the employer, we are obligated to remit this amount directly to HMRC. The deduction percentage stands at 13.8%.
All M&D Umbrella Solutions employees aged between 22 years old and state pension age, with earnings surpassing £10,000 annually, are automatically enrolled in our endorsed workplace pension plan through Now:Pensions.
Your pension contributions are deducted before tax calculations, rendering it a tax-efficient method for retirement savings. While we encourage all employees to contemplate long-term saving, you retain the right to opt out if you prefer. Following your initial pay period, you will receive an email from Now:Pensions containing comprehensive details.
